Sustainability: Skills and solutions for accountants

Jun 04, 2024 · 2 min read · AICPA & CIMA Insights Blog

A new online CPE course developed by AICPA® & CIMA® in partnership with the University of Oxford Saïd Business School is leading the way in supporting CFOs, accountants and financial managers with the expertise they need to navigate the growing demands of a global priority.

The six-week ESG and Sustainable Financial Strategy Course starts on 19 June, with live classes that give participants access to world-leading faculty members. Upon successful completion of the course, participants will earn a digital certificate of attendance, jointly signed by AICPA & CIMA and the Oxford Saïd Business School.

‘Our partnership aim is to build capacity and capability amongst our members, students and other engaged professionals with whom we work, to support them with the skills they need in the brave new world of sustainability accounting, sustainability-related financial reporting, and sustainable business models’, said Jeremy Osborn, DPhil, FCMA, CGMA, CPA (Australia), global head of ESG at AICPA & CIMA. ‘And that has an impact on accountants working in business and industry and accountants working in audit and assurance.’

‘By joining forces with AICPA & CIMA, this course is a prime example of how we’re able to help organisations right at the top level, where it matters and has real impact’, added Amir Amel-Zadeh, DPhil, MPhil, Dipl.Kfm (Germany), associate professor of accounting and the academic course director at the Oxford Saïd Business School.

US CPAs: Sustainability CPE credits contribute to career advancement

Three cohorts have already completed the ESG and Sustainable Financial Strategy Course. Cohort four, starting this month, will benefit greatly from the introduction of CPE credits; US-based practitioners will receive 26.5 credits for the course.

Over the past year, the US reporting environment has changed significantly. For example, American companies will be required to report against the European Sustainability Reporting Standards for financial year 2028. Many are preparing now.

‘The bottom line is these requirements are going to flow through the office of the CFO. The CFO team is responsible for public reporting to investors. It’s a really big exercise. The right knowledge and skills are essential and the CPE credits available from the June cohort are an added benefit’, explained Osborn.

Course highlights include:

  • Unpacking the issues that society and organisations are facing, confronted with the realities of climate change and other sustainability-related concerns

  • Focusing on strategic financial planning and long-term value creation to build knowledge about how to incorporate sustainability practices into business strategy

  • Interacting with capital markets and stakeholders and how to respond effectively to sustainability challenges

  • The opportunity to network and build a peer group — a powerful part of the course

Future-proof your sustainability skill set

This course goes beyond theory and frameworks. With the included assignments, you will take away a slide deck tailored to your own organisation that applies the frameworks learned. You’ll have a practical sustainability transformation plan to show the board and executive management team, ready to be implemented in your organisation.

Elevate your career with sustainability expertise, unlock opportunities for growth and collaboration and empower change from within your organisation.

Register by 18 June for the ESG and Sustainable Financial Strategy Course’s next cohort.
